The New Melle Chamber of Commerce presented $2000 scholarships to four well-deserving recipients on June 2 at The Quarry Wine Garden. This year's winners were Jacquelyn Oetterer, Luke Bequette, Lindsey Molitor and Kyra Blondin.
Jacquelyn Oetterer attends the University of Wisconsin La Crosse and is a student-athlete on the Volleyball Team. Her major is in Geography, concentrated in Bio-Science on a pre-engineering track. She plans to study climate change and renewable energy. This scholarship allows her to concentrate on her studies and worry less about financials.
Luke Bequette attended West Minster Academy for six years and plans to attend the University of Alabama. Luke intends to major in Finance with a minor in Actuary Science and one day hopes to become an actuary, and this scholarship allows him to do just that.
Lindsey Molitor attends Kansas State University (the Wildcats), and is enrolled in the College of Architecture and studies Industrial Design. She focuses on furniture and products and is learning how to weld and do fine woodworking. Lindsey says this scholarship allows her to learn things she thought she would never have the chance to.
Kyra Blondin is graduating from Francis Howell High School and plans to attend Rockhurst University and will play lacrosse. Kyra intends to become an Occupational Therapist; this is a five-and-a-half-year program. (Kyra couldn’t be at the presentation, so her mom, Erica, accepted for her. Erica was playing in an All-Star La Crosse game that evening.)
The NMCC has awarded over $40,000 in scholarships to the local youth over the past 20 years. To help fund these scholarships, the New Melle Chamber of Commerce and New Melle Sports and Rec host a golf tournament each year. The proceeds go to youth sports programs at NMSR and help fund the NMCC scholarships. This year's golf tournament will be held Saturday, August 13, at the Golf Club of Wentzville; click here for more information
